Studies conducted at the Developmental Neuropsychology Laboratory (DNL) focus on the effects of obstetric and perinatal complications on developmental outcome in infants, toddlers, and school age children born at risk. Participants in in these studies required neonatal intensive care due to prematurity or other birth complications such as low birth weight, neonatal respiratory distress, perinatal intracranial hemorrhage, and intrauterine growth retardation. The DNL is dedicated to the study of various factors that may influence the extent of cognitive, motor, and neropsychological recovery from these early complications. Such factors may include the extent of the insult, the developmental period during which the insult occurred, the newborn's gestational age, sex, and other background variables. It is anticipated that the body of research generated by DNL will help us understand the nature of brain response to early trauma.
